Trust Building and Public Dialogue with Environmental Activists and Indigenous Peoples


Background

After an environmental disaster in the Arctic, our client engaged INCAS to lead a social licence restoration effort, which involved direct engagement with environmental activists and Indigenous Peoples, bolstered by strategic public dialogue initiatives.

Description

Over 12 months, the project integrated five key elements to forge renewed trust and the co-creation of remedial actions for our client, environmental activists, and the affected Indigenous Peoples:

  • Strategy development We crafted and refined an evidenced dialogue strategy with our client, emphasising trust building and reputation recovery, and featuring a social media component to catalyse public dialogue.

  • Stakeholder process review We conducted a thorough assessment of the client’s stakeholder interaction frameworks within their key departments, ensuring alignment with best practices and transparency.

  • Virtual and in-person stakeholder roundtables We facilitated a series of digital and face-to-face roundtable discussions, fostering a collaborative environment for our client and domestic stakeholders to establish shared objectives and actionable plans for disaster response and future prevention.

  • Engagement with key voices Our team proactively engaged with influential critics, maintaining ongoing, constructive exchanges to promote understanding and partnership.

  • Social media and communication oversight We monitored social media narratives and executed communication strategies that reinforced trust-building measures, simultaneously opening for broader public engagement on the company’s pressing challenges.


OUTCOME

The result was a dynamic and sustained dialogue, bridging the gap between our client and pivotal environmental and Indigenous Peoples groups. Our efforts catalysed a targeted, solution-oriented online public discussion that addressed pressing concerns over the company’s environmental and social footprint. A solutions and preventive action plan was developed by consensus and implemented in the subsequent phases of the project.
